NYC officials probe surge in cyclosporiasis as lettuce outbreak wanes
On August 20, 2026, New York City health officials said they were investigating a surge of more than 800 cyclosporiasis cases reported in the state since May and advised residents to wash and cook produce thoroughly while the source of the outbreak remained unidentified. Earlier, a multistate outbreak tied to Taylor Fresh Farms' iceberg lettuce from central Mexico had infected over 9,400 people in 17 states, the largest such outbreak in U. S. history, according to health officials.
The CDC later confirmed the spread to Maine and Massachusetts, bringing the total number of affected states to 17. Massachusetts health officials reported 147 laboratory-confirmed cases as the recall continued. The CDC had previously reported more than 24,000 cases across 47 states with the weekly increase slowing, and experts said the risk from lettuce was now low but urged continued vigilance.
