The Timber Fire in Monterey County has burned 2,000 acres, remains 5% contained and threatens 259 structures, prompting evacuation orders for several zones near Highway 1.

The Timber Fire in Monterey County has grown to about 2,000 acres and is 5% contained, according to a Tuesday morning update from CAL FIRE. The blaze, which started Saturday night near Loma Vista in the Los Padres National Forest, threatens 259 structures in the Big Sur area, prompting evacuation orders for zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and part of MRY-F028, including the Ventana Inn, and evacuation warnings for adjacent zones.

Fire crews are focusing on protecting homes along Highway 1 in the Ventana region, clearing brush, establishing water supplies and securing access routes. Rough, steep terrain has limited ground access, while a marine layer has constrained nighttime helicopter operations. Crews are working to set up a water dip site above the inversion layer to enable aerial drops.

Nearly 500 personnel are assigned to the incident, including 36 engines, 13 hand crews, 8 helicopters, 7 water tenders and 5 dozers, with additional air tankers on standby. Officials expect warmer, drier weather through early next week, though a 15% chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast for Wednesday afternoon and evening.

State Route 1 remains open, but motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow evacuation directives. The temporary evacuation point and shelter have been moved to Carmel Middle School, where the American Red Cross and Monterey County staff are providing food, water, bedding and assistance, including support for pets from the local SPCA. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
