The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded over 5,000 infections and 2,300 deaths, prompting WHO officials to warn that the epidemic is far from under control.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health reported Wednesday that the current Ebola outbreak has reached 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths, marking the fastest-spreading epidemic of its kind. The virus, identified as the Bundibugyo strain, has spread roughly three times faster than the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak, which caused more than 11,000 deaths.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a briefing that the outbreak “has spread rapidly and the risk of further national and international spread remains high,” adding that “the epidemic is far from being under control.”

Health workers in the hard-hit Ituri province face severe operational challenges. Nurse Thérèse Anyiya said staff are exhausted by demanding work conditions and delayed pay, leading some colleagues to strike. Violence against responders has also risen; a mob in Aru territory attacked a health team, setting an ambulance on fire, according to Michael Wani, president of a local cultural association.

Doctors Without Borders emergency coordinator Trish Newport emphasized the need for community awareness, stating that residents must know the signs and symptoms and how to seek care. Dr. Martin Cwinyay, involved in the provincial response, said bringing services closer to remote mining and displacement areas is essential.

The outbreak, which likely began in the mining town of Mongbwalu in February, has been hampered by rebel threats, poor road access, and limited vaccine options for the Bundibugyo virus. The overall case-fatality rate stands at 47.4%, but it climbs to 70% in North Kivu where response capacity is weakest.
