FBI reports over 6,000 arrests in D.C. one year after federal crackdown
The FBI reported that its intensified enforcement in Washington, D. C. has produced more than 6,000 arrests, seized large quantities of drugs and firearms, and coincided with a reported 44% decline in homicides.
The crackdown follows a federal task force created in August 2025 that earlier logged over 16,000 arrests and apprehended gang members and homicide suspects. President Trump's emergency deployment of the National Guard and federal agents to the capital was extended through 2029, keeping about 4,700 troops on patrol and drawing criticism over its legality and a $3 billion price tag. Courts have since limited the most aggressive measures, prompting ongoing debate about the impact on the city's autonomy.
