AOC’s egg-freezing reveals high costs and insurance gaps
U. S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s elective egg-freezing cycle drew attention to the procedure’s steep price, which can exceed $40,000, and to the fact that most U. S. health plans do not cover it, prompting calls for broader employer benefits and policy reforms, CNBC reported. Earlier this month Ocasio-Cortez announced she would undergo egg freezing and said she would document the process on Instagram, The Guardian reported.
She later posted a video describing the first steps of the treatment, BBC noted. Reports that she ended her engagement to Riley Roberts in 2022 came from The Independent and Newser. CNN said elective egg freezing has become more popular and now costs between $10,000 and $15,000 plus annual storage fees. In New York, her out-of-pocket expenses spurred a state Senate proposal to require insurers to cover elective egg freezing, Gothamist reported. Financial disclosures showed she still owes between $15,001 and $50,000 in federal student loans, New York Post noted.
