Tommy John, famed pitcher, passes away at 83
Former MLB pitcher Tommy John died at age 83 on August 14 in Terre Haute, Indiana, after a period in hospice care, NBC News reported on August 16. Earlier in August, John announced he was withdrawing from public appearances while undergoing bladder cancer treatment, thanking the late Dr. Frank Jobe for the surgery that bears his name, NBC News said.
He had previously cancelled his participation in the Yankees' Old-Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium, citing health concerns, MLB. com reported. A week earlier, John used the Old-Timers’ Day ceremony to thank the Yankees organization, the Steinbrenner family and fans, USA Today noted.
