Wildfire Activity Escalates Across Western U.S. and Canada, Evacuations Ordered

सारांश

More than 30,000 firefighters are battling over 94 large wildfires in the western United States and Canada, with evacuations affecting tens of thousands of residents.

Evacuation orders have been issued in parts of the western United States and southwestern Canada as hot, dry weather drives the spread of wildfires. The National Interagency Fire Center reported 183 new fires, including eight large ones, across the U.S. since Saturday, with more than 30,000 personnel from over 640 crews assigned to the incidents. Firefighters are confronting more than 94 large fires nationwide.

In Utah, nearly a dozen active fires have burned over 300,000 acres, prompting evacuations in Morgan County as the Rocky Canyon Fire grew to more than 2,800 acres and remained uncontained. Two pilots were killed when their helicopter crashed while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire in Fishlake National Forest; Governor Spencer Cox expressed condolences, noting the crew "put themselves in harm's way to protect our state and gave their lives in that service." The Widemouth 2 Fire, the state's largest this year at over 118,000 acres, was 27% contained on Sunday.

Oregon lost a bulldozer operator, identified as Jason Ensign, while battling the Wrights Spring Fire, which has consumed 33,000 acres and also remained uncontained. Large fires continue in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Colorado. In Spokane, Washington, about 60,000 residents have been evacuated as crews work to contain several fires that have burned more than 10,000 acres. Local officials said crews have made "exceptional progress" and are ensuring no remaining heat sources pose a threat.

In British Columbia, Canada, more than 100 active wildfires are burning, with high temperatures and wind expected to persist in the southeast and Okanagan regions. The provincial wildfire service warned of a high potential for lightning-caused ignitions in dry areas. A state of emergency has been declared as the Bald Range fire forced over 20,000 people to evacuate.
