Adley Rutschman appears in Worcester rehab game as Red Sox weigh Toronto call-up

Summary

Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman played in a minor-league rehab game on Saturday, logging five innings and four at-bats, while the club evaluates his wrist before deciding on a possible roster move for the series in Toronto.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said the team will use Saturday’s game with the Worcester Red Sox as a final assessment before determining whether catcher-first baseman Adley Rutschman can join Boston for its Monday series in Toronto. Rutschman, who missed the last 13 games of the Orioles’ season with a wrist injury, entered the game as a designated hitter and caught five innings, recording a double and two RBIs in four plate appearances.

Rutschman, who posted a .251 average with eight home runs and a .764 OPS in 67 games for Baltimore, said his wrist “felt good” and he was pleased with how it responded during the outing. He added that the rehab environment “doesn’t mimic the intensity of a real game,” but it allows the medical staff to monitor his recovery.

The player’s father, Randy Rutschman, traveled from Oregon to watch his son’s first game back and expressed hope that his son will be healthy enough to travel to Toronto, noting he already has a plane ticket. Local fans who previously hosted Rutschman during his Cape Cod League stint also attended the game.

Boston will review the wrist’s condition in the coming days before making a final decision on Rutschman’s activation.
