Red Sox provide updates on injuries to Casas, Contreras and Rutschman
First baseman Triston Casas underwent wrist surgery with an undetermined return date, while catcher Willson Contreras missed a game due to illness. Catcher Adley Rutschman continues rehab from a wrist injury, with no set timetable for his debut.
The Boston Red Sox announced that first baseman Triston Casas, who has missed time this season due to a series of injuries, underwent wrist surgery on Tuesday. The club did not provide a projected timeline for his return.
Willson Contreras left the team's most recent game early, but the organization clarified that the departure was caused by illness rather than injury.
Catcher Adley Rutschman is still recovering from a wrist injury that delayed his anticipated debut with the Red Sox. Team executive Craig Breslow said there is no set timetable for Rutschman's return, emphasizing that the club wants to ensure he receives comprehensive medical evaluation before determining a schedule.
"I talked to him earlier [Monday], and at this point, I am not going to try to put a timetable on what his return might look like," Breslow said. "I think it’s best for him to get under our care and get our medical staff, our athletic trainers, our doctors’ hands on him, and from there we’ll figure out what the right course of action is here."
Breslow added that Rutschman remains optimistic about his recovery and that building rapport with the pitching staff will be a focus when he returns.
"These guys are professionals, and they’ve thrown to different catchers, whether that was because of injury or performance or whatever the case is. I think what it comes down to is building relationships and trust," he said.
The team also noted that replacement first baseman Willson Contreras, who has been filling in for Casas, is healthy and performing well.
