GAO finds Department of Government Efficiency vastly overstated $110 bn savings
The Government Accountability Office said the Department of Government Efficiency vastly overstated its cost-cutting results, finding that many of the claimed contract terminations and grant savings could not be verified. The audit, released on August 9, 2026, concluded that the department’s “Wall of Receipts” inflated savings by billions.
Earlier GAO reports in early August had flagged similar problems, noting that the department’s claim of $110 billion in savings was inaccurate and that its website contained data-quality issues. The agency also highlighted that the methodology used to calculate the savings lacked transparency and supporting documentation.
