Ukrainian drones hit S-400 launch pad near Putin's Black Sea residence

Ukrainian unmanned aircraft struck an S-400 anti-aircraft missile launch site protecting Vladimir Putin's palace near Gelendzhik, causing a fire that lasted several hours.

Ukrainian drones targeted an S-400 "Triumph" anti-aircraft missile launch pad located about 12 miles from the presidential palace complex near Gelendzhik in southern Russia. The strike set the pad ablaze, with the fire and smoke persisting for roughly three hours, according to Major Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's unmanned systems forces.

The launch site is part of a layered defence that includes electronic-warfare assets, mobile fire groups and a permanent no-fly zone over the 27-square-mile buffer surrounding the residence. Major Brovdi said the pad had been repurposed to fire missiles at Ukrainian cities, noting six missiles were launched on Aug. 8.

Analysts said Moscow has increasingly relied on S-400 systems to sustain its missile campaign against Ukraine amid a shortage of Patriot interceptors. Fabian Hoffmann, a missile expert at the University of Oslo, wrote that while the systems are less precise than other weapons, they still pose a threat to civilian infrastructure when used against densely populated areas.

Ukraine's military intelligence reported that, in addition to the Gelendzhik launchers, drones also struck two other S-400 launchers and a control antenna for medium-altitude Orion drones in occupied Crimea. The directorate of intelligence estimated the material loss could run into tens of millions of dollars.

The attack follows a recent incident in the same region where drone debris fell on a beach, killing seven people. Russia has struggled to counter the near-daily Ukrainian drone raids, which have also hit an oil refinery in Tatarstan and caused casualties in Tyumen. Kyiv says the strikes aim to pressure the Kremlin into negotiations, but Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin rejected calls for a ceasefire, stating that a “freeze” is impossible without addressing the conflict’s root causes.
