Judge Allows Trump to Amend BBC Defamation Suit, Halting Financial Disclosure
A federal judge in Washington, D. C. , on August 10 allowed President Donald Trump to amend his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC, removing claims about his businesses and thereby blocking the broadcaster’s request for his financial records. The amendment narrows the case to reputational damages alone. The decision followed a series of earlier court motions.
On August 5, the revocable trust that holds Trump’s assets asked a judge to pause a subpoena for the former president’s financial records, a move reported by Forbes. His lawyers later sought to halt the order, according to The Guardian, and a U. S. magistrate judge granted an emergency stay after Trump dropped the brand-damage claim, HuffPost said. Legal analysts noted that Trump’s relatives could still be deposed despite the limited disclosure, Newsweek reported, and a Florida federal judge subsequently paused the disclosure order while Trump pursued an amended complaint, Fortune reported.
