Midlife Vascular Risks May Reduce Dementia-Free Life by Up to 12 Years
Researchers at the Optimal Aging Institute of NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York reported that avoiding diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking between ages 48 and 68 was linked to up to 12 additional years free of dementia, according to a study of more than 12,000 adults. Earlier reports had highlighted a similar association, with some analyses suggesting up to 13 extra dementia-free years.
The findings, published in the open-access journal Neurology, stem from the long-term Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort and were interpreted by Dr. Josef Coresh and colleagues, who cautioned that the benefit depends on sustained control of these vascular risk factors.
