Puerto Rico eyes rainwater harvesting amid 48-hour drought rationing
Experts said that rainwater harvesting could provide billions of gallons annually in Puerto Rico, but the island lacks the necessary infrastructure and incentives, as the water-rationing emergency continues. By August 15, authorities were still coping with the crisis that began on August 4, when Governor Jenniffer González-Colón declared a state of emergency and ordered rotating 48-hour water cutoffs for more than 180,000 customers in San Juan and six nearby municipalities. The government distributed bottled water to vulnerable groups while a strengthening El Niño intensified the historic drought and strained the aging water system.
