Vikings quarterback battle narrows as Kyler Murray leads in practice snaps

Minnesota’s training camp shows quarterback Kyler Murray receiving more first-team snaps than J.J. McCarthy, prompting speculation that Murray may become the starter.

Kyler Murray has logged 146 first-team offensive snaps in the first weeks of Vikings training camp, compared with 136 for rookie J.J. McCarthy. Murray’s completion rate stands at 66.3 percent (73 of 110 attempts) while McCarthy is at 67.9 percent (70 of 103). Over the last four practices, Murray has taken 63 first-team snaps versus 33 for McCarthy, widening a gap that was initially presented as an even competition.

The Vikings’ front office recently hired interim general manager Rob Brezinski, who told reporters that a baseline level of quarterback play is essential for success. Brezinski also praised McCarthy’s work ethic, describing him as a “great person” who “works really hard.”

Analysts note that the team’s offensive scheme has been adjusted to limit McCarthy’s deep throws, resulting in a higher completion percentage but reduced yardage for star receivers such as Justin Jefferson, who has averaged just over 54 yards per game in recent contests. Defensive performance, led by coordinator Brian Flores, has been highlighted as a key factor in recent wins.

The Vikings’ 2026 preseason schedule includes games against the New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos, while training camp practices continue through mid-August. The final decision on the starting quarterback is expected to be announced by head coach Kevin O’Connell later in camp.
