WNBA ratings rise amid on-court incidents and social media controversy

Viewership for the WNBA has increased, but recent on-court altercations and players' social-media comments have sparked debate and concern about the league's public perception.

Viewership for the Women's National Basketball Association has climbed, with ABC reporting 2.52 million viewers for the Indiana Fever-Minnesota Lynx game on Aug. 2. The surge follows heightened interest generated by rookie star Caitlin Clark and other high-profile players.

The league, however, has faced several on-court incidents that quickly moved to social media. On Saturday, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was ejected after a flagrant foul on Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington. Carrington later posted the phrase “white privilege” on her personal account, prompting a broader discussion about race and conduct in the sport.

Cunningham also voiced her view that transgender women should not compete in women’s sports, a stance that aligns with a recent New York Times/Ipsos poll showing 79 percent of Americans share the same opinion. No transgender athletes are currently on WNBA rosters, and existing eligibility rules are in place across major sports organizations.

The incidents have drawn commentary from former NBA players and political figures, further amplifying the debate. League officials have not issued a formal response to the specific remarks, but the events underscore the challenges of managing player conduct and public discourse.

Despite the controversies, several players have delivered notable performances, including Kayla McBride’s record-tying ten three-pointers and Jessica Shepard’s triple-double for the Dallas Wings. Analysts note that while heightened drama can attract attention, a persistent cycle of conflict may risk alienating both long-time fans and newer viewers.
