Spokane firefighters fought the Old Trails wildfire for more than 17 hours on 9 August, protecting homes on Woodside Avenue in the city’s northwest while the blaze destroyed dozens of houses but caused no fatalities, the Spokesman-Review reported. The wind-driven fire had crossed the Spokane River, prompting mandatory evacuations of thousands north of Francis Avenue. Three fast-moving blazes burned over 10,000 acres, destroyed roughly 850-900 structures and forced the evacuation of about 65-67 000 residents.
Authorities arrested a 37-year-old man on first-degree arson charges. More than 1,500 firefighters from 24 states worked 16-hour shifts, and by the end of the week containment lines were established despite red-flag conditions.
