Bill Maher criticizes Rand Paul for releasing Dr. Fauci's diary and pursuing contempt charges
Comedian Bill Maher accused Senator Rand Paul of abandoning his libertarian privacy stance after the senator disclosed Dr. Anthony Fauci's pandemic diary and sought a contempt of Congress referral.
During Friday’s episode of HBO’s "Real Time," comedian Bill Maher said Senator Rand Paul had contradicted his long-standing libertarian position on privacy by publishing Dr. Anthony Fauci’s pandemic-era diary and by threatening to hold the former health official in contempt of Congress. Maher argued that releasing the documents undermined Paul’s reputation as a “Senator Right to Privacy" and warned against using government power to punish political opponents.
The criticism follows a vote by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Paul, to refer Fauci for contempt after the doctor invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly during a hearing on his pandemic response. In the days preceding the hearing, Paul released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s private notes stored on a government computer.
Jason Mudd, chief executive of Axia Public Relations, told Fox News Digital that the focus should be on why the diary matters rather than how it was obtained, noting that a public official’s notes on a government system differ from a private citizen’s journal.
Media analyst Kaivan Shroff said Maher’s comments gain attention because he often critiques both major parties, giving his remarks broader resonance among viewers who may be skeptical of Fauci and the political establishment.
Fox News Digital contacted Senator Paul and Dr. Fauci for comment but did not receive a response.
