Sony confirms end of PlayStation disc sales by 2028
Sony announced in Tokyo that new PlayStation games will be sold only digitally from January 2028, adding a warning sticker to PS5 boxes to inform buyers of the upcoming change. The decision, confirmed on 31 July, marks the latest step in the company's shift toward a fully digital catalog.
Earlier in July, Sony reiterated the plan, saying it reflects broader industry digitalization despite fan petitions and criticism. The company later assured that ending disc production would not harm its financial performance, and CFO Lin Tao emphasized that the PS5 will stay cheaper than gaming PCs, citing lower console shipments and rising hardware costs as reasons to focus on digital sales.
