Boy George withdraws from London production of Jesus Christ Superstar
Boy George's manager announced the singer will no longer appear as Herod in the West End run of Jesus Christ Superstar, citing a decision made after recent controversy over his new song supporting Israel.
Boy George will not perform as Herod in the upcoming London Palladium staging of Jesus Christ Superstar, his manager Paul Kemsley said on Thursday. Kemsley explained that the decision was taken "with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company" and thanked them for their professionalism.
The manager did not name a specific cause but referenced the singer's recent release of the song "We Will Dance Again," noting that George "has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions" and that Kemsley felt it was appropriate to step aside to keep the production's focus intact.
The former Culture Club frontman had been scheduled to begin performances on Monday and continue through August 15. He has not commented publicly on the withdrawal.
"We Will Dance Again" was released earlier this week and contains lyrics referencing the October 7 attacks in Israel and expressing solidarity with Jewish people. The track has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising it and others criticizing its political tone.
Boy George, who is not Jewish, has previously spoken out in support of Jewish communities following the October 7 events and opposed calls to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest over Israel's participation.
