Aaron Donald works out at Rams facility as retirement status remains uncertain
Aaron Donald was seen training at the Los Angeles Rams' facility, prompting speculation about a possible return, though no contract discussions have been confirmed.
Aaron Donald visited the Rams' training site in Woodland Hills last week, marking his first publicly reported workout since announcing his retirement following the 2023 season. Head coach Sean McVay said the team does not expect further contact from Donald until the squad reconvenes at its Woodland Hills facility after the current training camp at Loyola Marymount University, which ends with a public practice on August 6.
Analyst Mike Palmer noted that while Donald has always maintained good physical condition, “there are differences in football shape and staying in shape,” and suggested the former defensive tackle is assessing his readiness to return after two years away. Palmer added that the Rams are not actively negotiating a contract, but the possibility remains open.
Former NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport quoted veteran reporter Adam Schefter, who said, “Nobody said that,” referring to rumors of a comeback, and added that any potential deal would be speculative, though “the ingredients are there to make it happen.”
According to a text exchange reported by former Rams executive John Schultz, Donald replied that he is “for sure flirting with the idea” of returning and would consider it if he “finds the fire.” He also mentioned the appeal of playing in the Super Bowl at the Rams’ SoFi Stadium.
Donald remains on the Rams’ reserve/retired list, meaning his 2024 salary could be reinstated should he decide to return. The team has about $16.3 million in cap space for the season, and a one-year contract has been suggested as a possible arrangement, similar to quarterback Matthew Stafford’s recent extension.
Donald, a ten-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, retired after a ten-year career that included 111 sacks and a Super Bowl appearance in 2021. His departure left a significant gap on the Rams’ defensive line, though the team’s playoff positioning this week limits immediate on-field impact.
