Russian missile and drone attacks kill at least nine in Ukraine and trigger NATO response after missile lands in Poland

Summary

A coordinated Russian strike across Ukraine killed at least nine civilians and injured dozens, while a missile that entered Polish airspace prompted NATO to scramble aircraft and activate defenses.

A large-scale Russian missile and drone barrage hit multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, killing at least nine civilians, including children, and wounding more than 50 people, officials said. The attacks struck Kyiv, the western city of Lviv, the Dnipropetrovsk region, Poltava and Kherson, targeting residential areas, industrial facilities and sites believed to store weapons.

In Kyiv, a ballistic missile killed a 31-year-old man and injured two others, while more than 56,000 residents sought shelter in subway stations. In Lviv, a cruise missile caused one death and injured over 30, including several children. The Dnipropetrovsk region reported six fatalities, among them a 6-year-old girl and two boys, with additional casualties in Kryvyi Rih.

A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace and fell in a rural area of Lublin province without causing injuries or damage. Polish authorities scrambled an F-16 fighter and a helicopter to locate the impact site, and NATO activated two fighter jets, an attack helicopter and additional aircraft, as well as ground defenses. NATO spokesperson Col. Martin O’Donnell said the alliance would continue to take necessary measures to protect NATO territory.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as “very serious” but said there was no indication that Poland was the target. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing a shortage of Western-supplied air-defense systems, urged faster delivery of Patriot missiles, noting that Russian strikes have intensified amid ongoing attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.

Russia’s defence ministry said its strikes aimed at Ukrainian air bases, arms factories and logistics facilities, while Ukrainian officials reported that more than 260 of the 280 drones launched were intercepted. The attacks also included strikes on Russian Wildberries warehouses, marking the 14th depot hit by Ukrainian drones in two weeks.
