Detroit Lions sign running back Jahmyr Gibbs to record contract

Summary

The Lions agreed to a three-year extension with Gibbs that could reach $75.75 million, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Detroit announced a three-year contract extension for running back Jahmyr Gibbs that is valued at $67.5 million and could rise to $75.75 million, including $51.5 million in guarantees. The deal surpasses the recent agreement signed by Bijan Robinson and establishes Gibbs as the league's highest-paid running back.

Gibbs, the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has become a key contributor to Detroit's offense, posting 1,745 scrimmage yards and 49 total touchdowns over three seasons. His career averages rank among the league leaders, with 5.3 yards per carry and 39 rushing touchdowns.

With veteran back David Montgomery now with the Houston Texans, the Lions expect Gibbs to assume a larger workload. > "He’s going to be our bell cow now," head coach Dan Campbell said in June. "He can run every scheme, create his own space in the middle, and we’ll ask a lot of him."

The extension follows a four-year, $81 million contract for linebacker Jack Campbell, also signed this offseason. General manager Brad Holmes indicated that the team will consider new deals for tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch, though Campbell noted that Branch’s health after a torn Achilles will be a factor before any extension is offered.
