Dodgers acquire Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal from Tigers
Los Angeles added two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to a roster that already includes Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Mookie Betts, sending three minor-league prospects to Detroit.
Los Angeles Dodgers completed a trade for right-hander Tarik Skubal, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, on Saturday night. Skubal, who was with Detroit when the Tigers beat the Athletics 8-6, will join a rotation that already features Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, according to team reports. The Dodgers, who lead the National League West, will pay Skubal about $9.5 million for the remainder of the season.
Detroit will receive three minor-league prospects – right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith and outfielder Zyhir Hope – as part of the deal. Skubal, 29, posted a 7-5 record with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings this year. He is eligible for free agency after the World Series and is expected to negotiate a long-term contract.
"I’m excited to be a Dodger," Skubal said after learning of the trade. "I’m excited to get down there and meet all those guys and chase three championships in a row."
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised the addition, noting that the club already leads the majors with a 3.36 ERA among its starters. The team entered the season with a $323.3 million opening-day payroll and a total payroll of $487.1 million after taxes.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch thanked Skubal for his contributions, saying, "I’ve watched this guy rise to the top of the sport. He’s carried us a lot. I’ll forever be grateful for the things he did for this organization."
Skubal underwent a minimally invasive elbow procedure in May and returned to the mound in mid-June. He recorded his 1,000th career strikeout in a recent start for Detroit before the trade.
