Iran-linked cyberattacks hit municipal water systems across more than a dozen U.S. states

Federal officials said the coordinated cyber intrusions that accessed control systems of municipal water utilities in at least twelve U. S. states were most likely carried out by Iran-backed actors on 7 August.

The attacks follow a series of intrusions that began in late July, when hackers breached the operational technology of more than 30 water systems in Minnesota on 26-27 July, prompting a state-led response but no service disruptions. Similar unauthorized access was later confirmed at an Oregon drinking-water provider, and investigations by the FBI and EPA have linked the broader campaign to Iranian groups, leading to warnings to utilities in at least seven states.
