UEFA Maintains Boycott Threat After FIFA Apology Over World Cup Deal
UEFA said on 6 August that it still lacks confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino and will not lift its threat to boycott FIFA competitions until its demands are met, despite FIFA’s apology for the abandoned World Cup profit-sale plan. The dispute began in early August when Infantino unveiled a proposal to create a $20 billion commercial subsidiary and sell a 20 percent stake in World Cup revenues to private investors, a move UEFA and other confederations condemned as a privatization of football assets.
UEFA, joined by CONCACAF and other regional bodies, voted to boycott FIFA events and senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro quit in protest. After widespread opposition, Infantino announced the plan’s cancellation in mid-August, prompting UEFA to declare loss of confidence and to warn of possible legal action against FIFA and venture-capital partner Thrive Capital.
