Judge Blocks Minnesota’s Statewide Prediction-Market Ban
U. S. District Judge Katherine Menendez issued a preliminary injunction on 26 July that blocked Minnesota’s statewide ban on prediction-market platforms, while allowing the state to regulate certain contracts that do not qualify as swaps, a ruling reported on 28 July.
The judge said the ban likely conflicts with federal law because the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has primary jurisdiction over the industry. Earlier reports noted that the injunction was sought by platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket US, which argued the law would cause irreparable harm.
