Police kill Berlin Pride van attacker, deradicalisation program under scrutiny
Police said they shot dead the 21-year-old suspect who had driven a rented van into the crowd at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day parade, killing one woman and wounding dozens, and that the attack is being investigated as Islamist terrorism while a deradicalisation programme that had flagged him as high-risk is now under scrutiny. The van rammed into participants in Tiergarten park during the parade, prompting police to halt the event and launch a manhunt.
Initial reports said at least 15 people were injured and one person was killed. Authorities later confirmed the suspect had known ISIS links and may have also used a bladed weapon.
