White House asks Supreme Court for emergency stay on mail-ballot rule
The White House in Washington asked the Supreme Court to pause a district-court injunction that blocks President Trump’s executive order requiring postal verification of all voters, citing urgency ahead of the November midterms. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the challenge after the Justice Department filed the petition, and a three-judge panel of the D. C. Circuit later upheld the view that the injunction was premature. Earlier, the 1st U.
S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a district-court ruling that barred enforcement of the order in 23 states and the District of Columbia. The litigation began when U. S. District Judge Indira Talwani denied a motion to dismiss a lawsuit by voting-rights groups, finding the order likely unconstitutional.
