House Judiciary Chair Calls for DOJ Probe of Jack Smith
Republican Representative Jim Jordan asked the Justice Department to investigate former special counsel Jack Smith for alleged false statements to Congress, in Washington, D. C. He submitted a criminal referral claiming Smith provided inaccurate testimony about congressional records, CBS News reported. Later, CNN noted that the Justice Department acknowledged receipt of the referral and began reviewing the matter.
Democratic members of the committee, including Jamie Raskin, called the request baseless, NPR said. Smith’s attorneys, led by Todd Blanche, described the referral as unprecedented and unfounded, USA Today reported. The referral sparked a partisan split, with Republicans pressing for a criminal probe while Democrats and Smith’s legal team rejected the premise. The Justice Department has not announced any charges, and the controversy remains confined to congressional and legal statements.
