Madison Cancels Summer Events After Police Shooting of Corey Ruiz
AP News reported that Madison officials cancelled several major summer events after a police officer shot and killed 38-year-old homeless man Corey Ruiz, sparking protests and a state-led homicide investigation. Police said the incident occurred when Ruiz brandished a large fixed-blade knife during an attempted arrest, wounding an officer before the officer fired.
The officer and three other officers were placed on administrative leave, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation assumed jurisdiction over a homicide probe. Protests followed in Madison, including a demonstration that disrupted a police briefing, and civil-rights lawyer Ben Crump urged criminal charges against the officer.
