Transmissible melanoma found in Lake Memphremagog catfish
Scientists at the University of Vermont reported that up to 37% of brown bullhead catfish sampled from Lake Memphremagog carried melanoma lesions, indicating a contagious cancer outbreak that may be tied to earlier flooding in the watershed. Earlier research had identified the disease as the first likely transmissible cancer in wild catfish, noting that the tumors share a common genetic origin. The findings, published in Nature, marked the first known transmissible cancer in a freshwater species.
