Nicaragua's President Ortega Announces Suspension of Future Elections

Ամփոփում

President Daniel Ortega said Nicaragua will not hold elections in the near future, effectively canceling the vote scheduled for November 2027 after a congressional term extension.

President Daniel Ortega told a crowd in Mexico City that Nicaragua will not hold elections for the foreseeable future, confirming the cancellation of the presidential vote slated for November 2027. The decision follows a January 2025 congressional vote that extended the five-year presidential term by one year.

Ortega made the remarks on the anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution that first brought him to power. He has been president since 2007, during which time he has amended the constitution, suppressed opposition parties and consolidated control over the country's institutions.

"There won't be anymore elections," Ortega said, adding that parties established under U.S. influence or the former Somoza regime are no longer viable.

Opposition figures and human-rights groups described the announcement as a further step toward entrenched one-party rule. Juan Sebastián Chamorro, a former 2021 presidential candidate, said the move mirrors the political systems of countries such as China and Cuba. Tiziano Breda, a senior analyst at ACLED, noted that the government appears to prefer eliminating electoral competition rather than staging a contested vote.

Lawyer Danny Ramírez Ayérdiz, who monitors human-rights abuses in Nicaragua, warned that the statement signals a higher risk of repression against those demanding the removal of the government or the holding of elections.

The government has previously released dozens of political prisoners to the United States and Guatemala, often stripping them of citizenship and property. International observers continue to question the legitimacy of Nicaragua's electoral processes and the country's commitment to democratic norms.
