Ortega declares suspension of future Nicaraguan elections
President Daniel Ortega said Nicaragua will not hold elections in the near future, cancelling the vote that was to follow a recent congressional term extension. The Guardian reported that Ortega framed the move as a way to block opposition attempts to seize power and said he would push new legislation to strengthen government control. The Associated Press noted that the announcement effectively nullified the presidential poll scheduled after the congressional vote extended the term.
CNN added that the decision means no elections will be held after Ortega’s term ends, consolidating the rule of Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo. Fox News said the suspension would prevent any electoral challenge to the administration once the term concludes. NPR echoed the statement, describing it as a suspension of future elections.
