FIFA probes post-final clash as Spain coach denounces Argentine conduct
FIFA opened a disciplinary investigation into the post-match altercations that followed Spain's 1-0 World Cup final win over Argentina, the federation said, according to The New York Times. The Disciplinary Committee later announced that the probe would focus on Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes' conduct, Yahoo Sports reported. ESPN noted that the inquiry also covers Spanish players and staff involved in the melee. NBC Sports added that FIFA appointed a prosecutor to examine possible breaches of its disciplinary code.
Yahoo Sports said the federation could impose sanctions on individual Argentine players and on the Argentine Football Association itself. In a subsequent clarification, FIFA confirmed that Paredes was not shown a red card after the match, Yahoo Sports reported. Spain midfielder Gavi later urged that Argentine participants should not be suspended, describing the incident as part of football's physical nature, ESPN reported. Finally, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente condemned the Argentine players' behaviour while praising his own squad's composure, Euronews reported.
