Democrats Lead Generic Ballot but Majority Outlook Remains Uncertain
A Daily Kos analysis of recent polling indicated that Democrats were likely to win back the House but that securing a sizable majority remained uncertain. Earlier polls showed a range of leads for Democrats: a Fox News poll reported a seven-point advantage on the generic House ballot, the strongest margin since 1996, while a CNN chief data analyst warned that the four-point generic advantage was lower than in previous midterms, raising doubts about a Democratic majority. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted July 8-13 found a three-point national lead for Democrats, with a larger margin among voters certain to cast a ballot.
USA Today noted that despite the generic lead, Republicans retain slim majorities in Congress and could benefit from recent redistricting maps. A study cited by The Daily Beast found that one in five Republican voters in key states might stay home or vote Democratic, suggesting lower GOP enthusiasm than in 2018.
