Tagged Atlantic Great White Shark Resurfaces, Resumes Northward Migration Toward Cape Cod
The 13-foot, 1,700-pound male great white shark tagged by OCEARCH resurfaced after months of silence and is expected to continue its northward migration toward Cape Cod this summer, according to Diario AS. The shark, identified as the largest ever tagged in the western North Atlantic, was first recorded near the Outer Banks on July 10, when researchers noted its northward trajectory toward Cape Cod and Canada.
Subsequent tracking showed it covering 354 miles in a week, reaching a point 45 miles off Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, after an 8,000-mile coast-to-coast migration, as reported by OCEARCH researchers. Earlier detections confirmed the animal’s size at 14 feet and weight of 1,700 pounds, providing new data on the movements of Atlantic great whites.
