India's Education Minister Resigns After Five-Week Delhi Student Protests
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on July 25 in Delhi after weeks of student demonstrations, and the decision was confirmed on July 27. The protests were led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party, which began in early July when activist Sonam Wangchuk started a hunger strike that lasted 26 days and saw him lose more than 9 kg, prompting a Delhi High Court petition for medical aid.
Police later moved him to a government hospital and dispersed a march to Parliament on July 20, using tear gas and batons and injuring dozens. The sit-in at Jantar Mantar grew to thousands of demonstrators and spread to more than a dozen Indian cities, demanding the minister’s resignation and reforms of the examination system after a paper-leak scandal.
