Detroit Red Wings announce Steve Yzerman's departure as GM
The Detroit News reported that the Detroit Red Wings announced Steve Yzerman had stepped down as general manager, ending his seven-year tenure with the club. According to the Detroit Free Press, Yzerman will move into a senior advisory role while the organization begins a search for a new head of hockey operations. ESPN noted that Yzerman also retained the title of executive vice president during the transition.
Defector added that his departure comes amid the franchise’s longest active playoff drought, with no postseason appearance in any of his seven seasons. The New York Times said critics have pointed to his rebuilding strategy, draft outcomes and roster moves as factors in the continued lack of success.
