A 50-foot cabin cruiser capsized in San Francisco Bay during a memorial gathering, killing a 79-year-old man, leaving a dog dead, and leaving three passengers missing as rescue efforts continue.

A 50-foot, three-deck cabin cruiser carrying 20 adults capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, killing a 79-year-old man and leaving three passengers missing, officials said. The vessel, based out of Stockton, was reportedly struck by a wave in rough water while participants attended a memorial service.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said a man found in the water was in severe distress, received CPR and was later pronounced dead. A dog on board also died. Thirteen people were rescued and three were taken to hospitals, where they were stabilized and expected to be released.

Coast Guard Lieutenant John Corvino said the search for the missing continues through the night, using air and surface scans, while firefighters have deployed 11 boats and divers. "We are going to continue for hours to make sure that we find these ... missing people, if possible," Crispen said.

The boat launched from San Francisco’s St. Francis Yacht Club. Local police, private vessels and rescue helicopters responded, and Mayor Daniel Lurie called the effort an "all-hands-on-deck" search. Crispen noted that whitecaps are common at this time of year, but the search will proceed as long as conditions are safe.
