Cabin cruiser capsizes near Alcatraz, one dead and three missing
The San Francisco Fire Department said a pontoon boat carrying 19 adults capsized in the Bay between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, killing one passenger and leaving two others unaccounted for. ABC7 Bay Area reported that rescue crews deployed multiple vessels to search the water for the missing people. The New York Times echoed the casualty count, noting that a pleasure boat had overturned and that search operations continued.
Later coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle identified the craft as a 49-foot cabin cruiser and said three passengers remained missing while 16 survivors were rescued. NBC News added that the vessel, described as 50 feet long, was participating in a memorial gathering, that the deceased was a 79-year-old man and that a dog on board also died, and that Mayor Daniel Lurie pledged city resources for the ongoing rescue and investigation.
