France probes teen volunteers after massive Fontainebleau forest fire
Firefighters battled a fast-spreading wildfire that engulfed the Fontainebleau forest south-east of Paris, prompting evacuations and transport disruptions. According to CBS News, the blaze burned roughly 1,900 acres and forced the closure of the A6 motorway. Yahoo reported that water-dropping aircraft were deployed as a heatwave intensified across western Europe. AP noted that hundreds of firefighters and dozens of vehicles were on the scene, and train services were delayed.
Euronews added that about 850 firefighters, hundreds of vehicles and several aircraft fought the fire, which eventually reached up to 1,500 hectares. French prosecutors then opened formal investigations into two 18-year-old volunteer firefighters suspected of igniting the blaze, Newser reported. The probe focuses on the alleged role of the volunteers in causing a fire that ultimately scorched about 5,000 acres of the forest. Authorities continue the firefighting effort while the investigation proceeds.
