Mexico files criminal complaints over deaths of 17 citizens in ICE custody
Mexico's government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, filed criminal complaints in the United States over the deaths of 17 Mexican citizens in ICE custody and enforcement actions. According to CNN, Mexico announced it would pursue both civil and criminal investigations after a Mexican man was shot by ICE, warning of heightened bilateral tensions. Sheinbaum later told The Guardian that Mexico intended to lodge criminal complaints in U. S. courts concerning more than a dozen migrants, citing the recent killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston.
Al Jazeera echoed that Mexico would ask U. S. prosecutors to bring charges after the deaths in ICE raids or detention, again referencing Salgado Araujo. USA Today reported that Mexico began submitting complaints to state prosecutors and sent cease-and-desist letters to private detention facilities after at least 14 nationals had died. CNN later confirmed the death toll had risen to 17, prompting the continuation of the criminal complaint filings and the cease-and-desist outreach.
