Unidentified object crashes in eastern Poland amid Russia's large-scale strike on Ukraine
An unidentified object exploded near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Poland while Russia conducted a long-range missile and drone attack across Ukraine, killing at least eight civilians.
An unidentified object detonated in an undeveloped area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province, about 95 km inside Polish territory, early Thursday, local authorities said. Polish police reported that residents heard a powerful blast.
Poland’s army said its air-defence systems observed at least a dozen missiles over western Ukraine, raising concerns about possible incursions into Polish airspace. The object’s origin has not been confirmed, and officials have not ruled out that it could be a Russian missile.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced a “massive strike using long-range precision weapons from land, air and sea” together with attack drones targeting military sites across Ukraine. The operation, according to the ministry’s Telegram statement, involved more than 70 missiles and over 280 drones.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks damaged or destroyed dozens of homes, businesses and infrastructure facilities, and reported at least eight civilian deaths, including children, in various regions. He added that Ukrainian forces intercepted more than 260 drones despite a shortage of air-defence missiles.
"The attack killed at least one person in Kyiv and another in the Poltava region," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
The strikes come after Zelensky’s visit to the White House, where he requested additional air-defence systems, and a subsequent stop in Lublin to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Tusk posted on X that the leaders discussed security concerns for Poland, Ukraine and Europe.
NATO fighter jets previously shot down Russian drones that entered Polish airspace in September, and Poland has regularly scrambled jets in response to Russian attacks on western Ukraine, though incursions onto Polish territory have been rare.
In a separate incident, a warehouse belonging to Russian retailer Wildberries caught fire in Penza after a Ukrainian drone strike, regional governor Oleg Melnichenko said, wounding one person and prompting the evacuation of about 200 people.
The events mark a particularly deadly month for Ukraine, with civilian casualties rising to the highest level since the war began in 2022.
