DR Congo Ebola Death Toll Tops 1,400 as Vaccine Trial Starts
The Congo Ministry of Health reported that the Ebola outbreak claimed more than 1,400 lives and that a volunteer received the first experimental vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain. The crisis followed weeks of health-worker strikes in Ituri province after staff went unpaid, protests that disrupted treatment centres and coincided with a rise in confirmed cases to over 2,000 and deaths past 1,000. Attacks on facilities and security concerns further hampered response, while neighboring Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda and the East African Community stepped up border screening and surveillance.
