Study finds gut bacterium Roseburia boosts muscle strength in humans and mice

Researchers reported in the journal Gut that the gut bacterium Roseburia inulinivorans is associated with greater muscle strength in both humans and mice. The study found a correlation between the bacterium's presence and higher hand-grip strength and overall muscle performance in younger and older adult participants. In parallel experiments with mice, the bacterium increased forelimb grip strength.

Muscle analysis showed a rise in type II fast-twitch fibers. The authors suggested the findings could inform probiotic strategies to mitigate age-related muscle loss.
