Waymo autonomous cars stranded after Presidio road-closure miscommunication

SFGATE reported that Waymo's autonomous vehicles became stranded in a roundabout on Lincoln Boulevard in the Presidio after the company did not receive notice of a road closure for Independence Day celebrations. The unexpected closure forced the cars into a dense pedestrian crowd, causing them to stop and blocking traffic on the boulevard. Several of the immobilized vehicles were later towed from the scene.

The blockage halted traffic in the area while officials worked to clear the site. City officials said they would review coordination procedures for large events to avoid similar miscommunications.
