Walmart summer rollbacks proceed as Trump claims administration prompted price cuts
Walmart announced seasonal discounts on a range of grocery items, while President Donald Trump said the price cuts resulted from a request by his administration, a claim the retailer has not confirmed.
Walmart announced a series of summer rollbacks on items such as ground beef, ribs, soda and seasonal produce, with discounts ranging from about 12% on 73% lean ground beef to roughly 50% on corn on the cob and cherries. Sam’s Club, the company’s warehouse subsidiary, also listed price reductions on 250 items, including chicken wings, beef hot dogs and ribs. The rollbacks were highlighted in a corporate press release on Monday.
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Walmart lowered prices “at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” citing a 15% discount on beef. He added that the sale was “a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.”
Walmart did not respond to the president’s claim, and a spokesperson for the retailer was not available for comment. The discounts had been advertised by Walmart locations for at least a week before Trump’s post, and similar seasonal sales are typical for the chain each summer.
Analysts note that grocery price inflation has risen 2.7% over the past year, outpacing overall inflation, with specific items such as beef and tomatoes experiencing larger increases due to supply constraints and higher input costs. A recent CNN poll found that a majority of respondents, including many Republicans, believe the administration’s policies have raised the cost of living.
The White House has not been reached for comment.
