Eye doctors warn against contact lenses on long flights
Eye doctors Dr. Priya M. Mathews and Dr. Arjan Hura warned travelers that wearing contact lenses on long flights can cause discomfort and raise infection risk, according to the New York Post.
They explained that the dry, low-humidity cabin air and reduced oxygen levels typical of pressurised aircraft exacerbate dry-eye symptoms for lens wearers. The physicians noted that these conditions are especially problematic on extended journeys or when passengers attempt to sleep with lenses in place. Both specialists advised passengers to switch to glasses for the duration of the flight to avoid the potential complications. The Center for Sight, which the doctors represent, echoed the advice as a precaution for airline travelers.
