Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers remain around 30 million, latest report shows

Summary

A recent Wall Street Journal report indicates that Xbox Game Pass has about 30 million subscribers, far below earlier projections and the company's target of 100 million by 2030.

Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass service appears to have plateaued, with subscriber numbers staying near 30 million, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing a source familiar with internal data. The figure contrasts with earlier projections made during the company's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which had estimated roughly 77 million subscribers for the year. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma acknowledged the slower growth in a memo accompanying a new round of layoffs.

Microsoft previously reported that Game Pass had reached 34 million subscribers in 2024, a 36% rise from the last officially disclosed count, and set a goal of 100 million subscribers by 2030. However, the latest estimate suggests growth has stalled in recent years.

"The service was not growing at the expected rate," Sharma wrote in her internal communication.

Industry analysts note that the discrepancy between projected and actual subscriber figures raises questions about the effectiveness of recent strategic moves, including the Activision Blizzard acquisition, in expanding the service's user base.
